Tech Talk

Tech Talk is a podcast for everything about technology. It is done by a trio of equally nonsensical high school students. We're a little underground, we're a little shady, and we commit no piracy yet somehow we know everything about it...

Episode 072: Brands Of Choice

The funniest one-liner ever happens in this show. You'll have to listen to find out. Other than that, this show was pretty damn good. This 60 minute show had some amusing news and for the topic we discussed our preferred brands for particular items.

Episode 071: Windows Vista

We're back again because you care. TK is back too. We had a regular show for the first time in forever. 30 minutes, a full cast, a real topic, and it felt good. The news turned out to be pretty amusing and the topic took a relatively serious because Windows Vista is..uh...serious. And stuff.

Episode 070: Traffic

We're back with our first show in 2 months. Thank you, bitches. You'll quickly notice that TK is absent from this show. You'll have to listen to the show to find out why. The news was amusing enough with just me and Dan and the topic was something to marvel at. We talked about traffic...in my car...on the highway. I will warn you that the quality is less than wonderful due to road noise, rain, high speeds, recording on my laptop mic and lots of other things.

Real Hosting is here, new show is coming

I actually paid money for this show. That's right, I bought real hosting from Dreamhost and that's where our site, our forum, and our shows will be hosted. The address is http://techtalk.puzzlepants.com and hopefully you'll be visiting there soon. In other news, we will hopefully be doing a show this weekend. It's really hard to get together to do one since we're all going to different colleges and we've all agreed that we don't want to degrade the show by using Skype. If there are any problems with the new site or forum, let me know right away (Contact Us page on the website). I've updated all the links in this feed and last but not least, the new address for the RSS feed is http://techtalk.puzzlepants.com/rss.xml

Pictures from Episode 069 Farewell...sort of

This is a long story but I'm going to try and condense it as much as possible. My plan was to film our most recent show and release both an audio and video version. This didn't really work out for several reasons. Originally I planned to film it using the camera we used for the behind the scenes and intro videos but I recently got a webcam that recorded at a much higher quality. Obviously, this webcam didn't have a microphone so I planned to sync the audio from the show to the video. To make a very long story short, it didn't work. Just check the pictures out

Episode 069: Farewell...sort of

For those of you wondering about the future of the show, here's the deal: it will continue although on a very limited schedule. Dan, TK and I have agreed that doing the show on Skype or even on a regular phone just wouldn't be the same (check out our first show if you don't believe us). We will do the show whenever possible but that unfortunately won't be very often. When we do get around to releasing content we will try to do as much as possible. My advice to you is subscribe to our RSS feed and just let our brilliance come to you whenever we release a show. Now, as for this show, it was pretty good overall. We turned the second half of the show into a kind of philosophy session...just listen for yourself.

Once again we bring you a 60 minute show with 13% less cholesterol than before.
Episode 065: Grab Bag

We're finally back with our first show in a couple weeks. We didn't intend to ever have another summer break like we did last year but shit happens. We were all very busy and I could give more excuses but it's not really necessary is it. We came back with a bang in the form of a 60 minute show plus a twist: we did the show in my pool. I'll assume we are the first podcast ever to do this so that makes us awesome. We covered 30 minutes of news stories and then covered an assortment of things in our grab bag topic. Check this one out for sure. Last but not least, thanks to IceCube for the new intro music in this show that we will be using from now on.

Links: NewEgg
The Familiar Project
GPE Home Page
OPIE Home Page
GEP vs OPIE Posts (So far my most fair comparison on the two)
GPE vs OPIE Wiki-Like Site
The Intimate Project
Official Project Hub Site for Linux Handhelds
Really Good Article About Linux on the iPAQ
Differences of iPAQ vs Zaurus and Technicalities of their Hardware and Putting Linux on them
The Pocket Workstation Project
Wiki for Handhelds
OpenZaurus Home Page
Download and Development Resource for PocketLinux

Completely lacking in any discernable form of enthusiasm, this show was one of the worst we've ever done.
Episode 060: Windows Password Cracking

I can't tell you how long I've been looking forward to this topic. I know we've covered it before but I felt we needed to do a specific session for two reasons. The first reason is that Hak.5, an IPTV show that I respect, made some glaring errors in their explanation of Windows password cracking. Also, I just felt that how we covered it before didn't do this brilliant topic justice.
Episode 059: Windows Tweaks

This show was average. That's probably the best way to sum this one up. I was way too excited about the redesign of our news site that I did but then again we're the only ones that can see it since it's the news site we use for the show. Anyways, the news was decent and the topic was Windows tweaks which turned out better than I thought but definitely not as good as it could been.

Before The Show

We felt like it was about time for another philosophy session. By "we" I mean me really so of course, as the leader of this little production, the session went ahead. I had to appease Dan and TK by feeding them and such but it worked out in the end. However, the first take was recorded on my laptop's mic since I forgot to plug in the real mic so we decided to do another one. Let's call it take 2. Take 2 is also funnier so I would recommend getting that if you're only getting one. Here are the links: http://techtalk.puzzlepants.com/shows/philosophy4take2.mp3 and http://techtalk.puzzlepants.com/shows/philosophy4take1.mp3

Episode 058: Plugins and Addons

This show was average. If you remember our ups and our downs, this was somewhere in the middle. Insults were plentiful and we finally had our first made up news story about ourselves thanks to our very own IceCube. A first of firsts in Tech Talk and another milestone we have passed.

Episode 057: The Digg Conspiracy

We have our ups and our downs. This was a down. We gave the word filler a whole new meaning with probably a third of the show being nice padding. Of course our padding is way better than anybody else's but that's not saying much. The news was good as long as it lasted and the topic was the recent Digg conspiracy that there's a ton of censorship and such going on at everybody's favorite news site.

Episode 056: College

This was by far one of the best shows we've done in a while. The news was quite classic and amusing, perhaps even a bit more than usual. We decided to take a break from covering technology since we've all had our trials and tribulations with the college admission process. Translation: we didn't do any research, didn't feel like pulling a tech topic out of our asses, and we figured this would be the best replacement. Enjoy.

Episode 055: Web Design

This show was definitely an improvement over last week's despite the fact that that's not saying much. We covered some pretty good news stories and followed that up with a relatively delicious topic of web design.

Episode 054: Office 2007

We can only do so many good shows in a row and this was definitely the end of our two show streak. This episode was average at best with seemingly random news stories and a lackluster coverage of Office 2007 as our topic. To top it off, there was a nice interruption that I edited out fairly nicely though you should be able to pick out pretty easily anyways.

Two legitimate shows in a row. What were we thinking? I'm not sure but I do know that it turned out pretty well.
Our official one year anniversary episode showed how far we've come since our first dismal show. It is a bit hectic and difficult to understand but if you stick with it there are some hilarious moments.

Episode 050: Celebration

It's hard to believe we've been doing this show for almost a year now. We decided to basically talk a little bit about how the show got started and a bit of reminiscing plus a ton of talking about how great we are. For the topic, I talked a lot about how much I do to keep this little production afloat and how little Dan and TK do. Ah, I'm great.

Episode 049: Outsourcing

Guests flying everywhere! We had two guests on this show and they were live this time. Yes, that means no guests Skyping from Canada this time. David (also featured in 10/21/05 MP3 Players) and Prakash from The Hindu and the Jew joined us for our 49th episode. The show was a bit chaotic since TK seemed to be having his period and there were five people trying to insult each other at the same time rather than three. However, we got in some good news and worthwhile discussion about outsourcing plus a bunch of hilarious moments. Check this one out for sure.

Piracy Edition Episode 001

This is the first official episode of our new segment entitled Tech Talk Piracy Edition. Each show will cover a few scene releases and will be about 5 minutes long. Links to each release covered will be provided in the show notes (Casanova.TELECINE.SVCD-SEPTIC, Casanova.TC.XviD-PUKKA, Just.Friends.SCREENER-SEPTIC). Corrections: I'm not sure why I was confused about the rerip for Just Friends. The link to the rerip can be found here and it has not been nuked. As for the diagonal lines I mentioned for the Just Friends screener, I found out that those were because I was using an experimental build of VLC to view the sample (visit our website to get the actual links because I can't put them in the RSS feed)

Episode 048: eDonkey

For once we actually kept our promise and made this show informational with a guest thanks to Skype. IceCube, who is from the Slyck forums, is the man behind most of the promotion of Tech Talk. As for the show, we took a few minutes longer on some damn good news stories and then more or less let IceCube cover his specialty: the eDonkey2000 network. We made sure to ask questions and almost be like a real set of hosts on a real show with a real guest. Amazing.

Bonus Content

Here is a bunch of stuff that I decided to release for no particular reason at all. Firstly, there is a philosophy session that I don't even know when we did. I think it was sometime at the end of 2005 or something. Next, there is a terrible botched attempt at something we like to call Tech Talk Piracy Edition. You'll see what it is about when you listen. We will hopefully try it again later and see if we can make it into something worthwhile. Finally, I put up a blooper from our last show on video codecs. For the RSS feed, I had to put the links below because I didn't want to add 3 seperate entries: http://techtalk.puzzlepants.com/shows/philosophy2.mp3, http://techtalk.puzzlepants.com/shows/pe.mp3, http://techtalk.puzzlepants.com/shows/techtalk021006blooper.mp3

Episode 047: Video Codecs

How about that? We did a show on time for once. And how about that? I released it before Saturday. I would say that this show was technically perfect but I was unavoidably detained by my dad for the last 3 minutes of the news. As such, my fellow cast members were more or less lost. Aside from that, the show went very well. We did another relatively simple topic but we hope to do a real show with either a real topic or a real guest (or perhaps even more than one)

Here is yet another show that we had to push back a day and it didn't turn out all that badly. It didn't turn out well but it definitely didn't turn out badly. The news wasn't good at all but the topic was pretty informational considering the fact that we decided it after the first half of the show.
Episode 045: Podcasts

Lots of news. Lots and lots of news. For some reason, we were quite energetic for this show, and that always helps. The news took a while since we had a ton of stories, but it was all worth it. The topic was awesome because I was talking forever. I mean forever. We covered podcasts, basically going over which ones suck and which ones are good and why.

This show turned out a lot better than I expected. Firstly, I forgot to plug in the mic for the first half of the show so everything was recorded on my laptop mic.
Episode 042: Grab Bag

We bring in the new year with a bang. This release may be a little late coming, but I'm sure you will agree it was worth the wait. We extended the news to 20 minutes and shortened the topic to 10, and it was pretty much perfect. We were more or less hilarious for the whole show, covering a ton of news stories and then looking back at 2005 and obviously making fun of the whole year.

Episode 041: The Holidays

We kicked ass. Somehow I managed to find a handful of worthwhile news stories for this show, though we ended up looking for a few stories towards the end. The news, though, didn't even hold a candle to the topic. We decided to talk about the holidays, and it was most excellent. Firstly, we took on Santa from an engineer's perspective, figuring out that he and his reindeer would be vaporized. Then we put down a few common technology gifts this season. Quite the show.

As promised, we had a nice, serious show for the first time in a while. It turned out damn good, and we threw so much information at you that you probably won't be able to keep up. The news ended up being pretty good, though not as amusing as it usually is while the topic was so kickass I can't even begin to describe. Again, we weren't quite as funny as usual, but the massive amount of knowledge you will carry away from this show makes up for that

For the first time in a long time, I tried something new for the encoding. I used LAME at 64 kbps, and I shaved 3 MB off the total size with no noticable degradation in quality. As for the show, the news was pretty good overall, regardless of the fact that we ran over time more than a minute. The topic was once again determined minutes before the segment began, but fear not, we plan for an actual informational and serious show next time, so be ready for it

Episode 033: Compression

I'm really sorry it took this long to get the show out, but I've been quite busy and haven't had much time to do it. Anyways, this was a fairly good show. The news wasn't too long or too short for once, and it ended up being pretty good. The topic was a bit off, but it still had a some useful information in it

Episode 032: Proxies

An extended 40 minute Tech Talk show for you to enjoy, and even a day early! We decided to do the show earlier rather than later, and it turned out pretty good. We had so much news that we had to make the show longer, and obviously we kicked ass on the news. So much news, so little time. Anyways, the topic was fairly lackluster and generally underwhelming, but clearly still worth listening to because of our vast knowledge about...well...everything

Episode 031: MP3 Players

Last week's show was a pretty tough act to follow, and this week we brought in a guest to see if we could top our last show. He just happens to be David from the Hindu and the Jew, a podcast we even advertise for on this site. His expertise was in the infamous iPod, and we basically made fun of him the whole time for his video iPod and general fanaticism regarding Apple MP3 players. Pretty good show overall.

Episode 030: How the Internet Works

This could quite possibly be the best show we have ever done. We had the perfect amount of time for the news, with everything from bomb-proof trucks to MySpace to human genes. The news was not quite as funny as normal, but the topic was the most informational we have ever been. We are on a whole other level of knowledge here. We'll call it a plateau. We are the shit, thank you very much

Finally! Damn our lives! Without them we would be able to do a show everyday, but we do have things to do in our normal lives. Sorry for the delay, but I hope you'll agree that it was worth the wait. We run through a bunch of pretty good news, and then the topic was absolutely kickass. You'll definitely hear some stuff that you have never heard in any other podcast...ever. Enjoy, bitches

Episode 028: CG Animation

We finish off September with a pretty good show. We have our ups and our downs, and I would say this is somewhere in the middle. We were slightly rushed for this show, and perhaps that will be apparent to our avid listeners. The topic for today was computer graphics animation, and I hope you will be able to tell how rushed this topic was...

For the first time in a long time, and for the second time ever, we had a guest on the show. He really wasn't an expert on anything and mostly just sat there saying nothing, but we had a guest nonetheless! The topic was a kind of potpourri, including more about Xbox 360, the PS3, and the Revolution. Other things we covered were DDR3 RAM, OLED, and AJAX.

Episode 026: Clustering

In the words of Dan, this is "another bitchin episode." For once, we actually had the right amount of news. We weren't rushing as usual or doing time-filler bullshit. The entire news half of the show kicked ass, and the topic of the show was clustering. Dan handles this topic almost like I would...almost...Definitely an informative and entertaining show

As a special treat for our 25th episode, we did a whole bunch of different topics that we didn't get to cover or thought of recently. I definitely think this was a good episode. The news was awesome as usual since I picked it out, and the topic turned out great. Some of the things we cover include: collisions (encryption), DHT (Bittorrent), rootkits (viruses), console modding, advanced Linux, ED2K, xpy, Knoppix 3.8 CeBIT Edition

Thanks to everybody who made this possible. One final note: as you have probably noticed, there was no show last Friday. This was because I was on vacation. There will be a show on Friday, September 9 at 8 PM (tentatively). We will be doing this show live. Thank you, bitches, that is all.

To say the least, our first live show turned out worse than expected. We didn't have any technical difficulties, but for some reason it just wasn't a good show.
Episode 021: Geek Wishlist

This show wasn't really our best, and it turned out that way for several reasons. Both guests we had planned to be on the show couldn't make it for various reasons, and Dan was, uh, confined to his home for undisclosed reasons, so he ended up on the phone. Anyways, we had lots of news from wacky to awesome, and the topic was geek wishlist. It's kind of hard to explain this bullshit topic here, so just listen!

Episode 018: Our Favorite Websites

This show was complete chaos. Neither TK nor Dan were available to do a show anytime between about 7 AM and 10 PM and you guys know as well as we do that there is no way in hell we're waking up before 7 AM to do a show, so we did this show right after everybody got home from the last one. Anyways, we had TK coming to us via Skype, Dan coming to us via a regular old phone, and me live as always. We hacked together some decent news stories in about 30 minutes. Somehow new shit that surfaced between the time we ended our last show and the time we began this show

We cover some really great news stories somehow. I still don't know how we manage to find almost a dozen new stories every single day for the past 2 days, but we do it for you guys. The topic was pirating, especially the practical and moral aspects of it as well as some ranting tangents. All in all, this turned out to be a pretty good show

Episode 002: Encryption

Alright, so the first show was a bit of an experiment. This show has the full 3 member crew, and this time there are no interruptions or other problems. The news stories are quite amusing as always, and the topic of discussion for this show is encryption. If the first show left a bad taste in your mouth, check this one out before you leave us
